The Ballad of Mary McGee (work in progress)

Mary was a beautiful lassie
With eyes like the wild Scottish sea
And all the boys in the village
Would give their last shilling
For a dance with sweet Mary McGee.

But Mary she paid no attention
For her heart had already been won
By the likes of another, she would have no other
Than a man who could dance with the sun.

I’m in love with the man in the moon, she sighed
As she sat at her window and watched him pass by
How grand it would be to dance in the sky
With the stars and the man in the moon
I’m in love with the man in the moon.

Mary’s friends begged her, lass, take a husband
You’ve got men at your beck and your call
Your sights are too high, take your eyes from the sky
Or you’ll wind up with nothing at all.

But Mary, she paid no attention
For her faith was as true as her love
As sure as the tide, she’d be bride
Of the man in the moon up above

I’m in love with the man in the moon, she sighed
As she sat at her window and watched him pass by
How grand it will be to dance in the sky
With the stars and the man in the moon
I’m in love with the man in the moon.

‘Twas Midwinter’s Night when they found her
In the heather that bent to the cold
And clutched in her hand was a thin wedding band
Spun from the finest of gold

Yes, I married the man in the moon, she cried
As she laughed in the heavens, content by his side
How grand it is to dance in the sky
As the wife of the man in the moon
I’m in love with the man in the moon.
